From France to the USA

The name MILEUR appeared for the first time in the 18th century, in a set of tiny villages in the south east of a town called "Chateau-Salins". It seems to be the deformation of the name MULLER, attested in the civil records, and so have an old german origin. The orthography of this patronymic has changed a lot since that time: we find nowadays MILEUR and MILLEUR, but also at an older period MULER, MILER, MULER etc. according to the imagination of the copyists. The reason of these changings is easy to understand: as the first Mileurs were mainly countrymen, they all were illiterate and could not correct errors of writings. Consequently it was the priests and then the registrars who first transcribed a name that remained for centuries only pronounced. Differencies of accent and pronunciation may have caused the errors we find today. The present orthography remained unchanged since the middle of the 19th century.
The Mileurs constitute a little family whose members may not exceed 60 in France, and perhaps less than 100 including the direct descendants in the United States. After long years of researches, we think that all the people named "Mileur" all over the world were necessarily related to each other. The rarer, the surer.et.
