14 Jul 1943: Keel laid down at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, ME

27 Oct 1943: Launched along with the USS Pomfret (SS-391) and the USS Piranha (SS-) in an historical triple launch.

04 Mar 1944: Commissioned with LCdr. Orme C. Robbins in command

01 May 1944: Departed Key West, FL for Pearl Harbor after rigorous training

13 Jun 1944: Arrived at Pearl Harbor and continued with training exercises

04 Jul 1944: Departed from Pearl Harbor for first war patrol in the area of the Bonin Islands

05 Aug 1944: Japanese POW, adrift in a raft, taken aboard

26 Aug 1944: Returned to Midway Island for refit

18 Sep 1944: Departed Midway Island for second war patrol in the area of Nansei Soto Islands

09 Oct 1944: Rescued six downed airmen off Okinawa as well as sinking a small Japanese fishing boat

18 Oct 1944: Made an unsuccessful torpedo attack on a destroyer that was part of an escort for three IJN cruisers

20 Oct 1944: Fired three torpedoes at a Japanese cargo ship for three misses

25 Oct 1944: Fired four torpedoes on a small convoy for four misses. Launched another spread of six for four hits on a freighter and the tanker Jinei Maru

29 Oct 1944: Attacked a small freighter with torpedoes and deck gun

31 Oct 1944: Made a night surface attack on a damaged tanker already damaged by the Trigger (SS-237), then joined the Trigger in escorting the damaged Salmon (SS-182) into Saipan

10 Nov 1944: Departed Saipan as part of a wolfpack under the command of Cmdr. T.B. Klakring

15 Nov 1944: Made a coordinated night surface gun attack with the Silversides and Trigger on an enemy sub-chaser. After depleting all 5-inch ammo, the Sterlet finally sank the vessel with torpedoes

30 Nov 1944: Arrived at Pearl Harbor

27 Dec 1944: Cmdr. H.H. Lewis assumes command of the Sterlet

25 Jan 1945: Departed Pearl Harbor for third war patrol as part of a wolfpack

01 Mar 1945: Sank a Japanese freighter in a torpedo attack

05 Mar 1945: Attacked and sank an enemy tanker with torpedoes

04 Apr 1945: Arrived at Midway Island for refit

29 Apr 1945: Departed Midway Island for fourth war patrol in the Sea of Okhotsk and the Kurile Islands as part of a wolfpack

29 May 1945: Made a determined attack on a small convoy sinking two vessels

10 Jun 1945: Arrived at Midway Island for refit

05 Jul 1945: Departed Midway Island for fifth war patrol in the areas of Kii Suido and Bungo Suido
